In a world where demand for produce and material items grows every day, it’s often hard to see that animals are facing the brunt of this demand. After all, people seem to want more meat, they want “glamorous” fur coats, and they even want leather for their furniture, their clothing, and so much more. This demand for leather has seen countless animals suffer a devastating fate in the past – but it seems as though times are now changing.
In fact, one company has changed the game completely, as they are now offering a fully eco-friendly and vegan form of leather that’s made entirely from the cactus plant! At the helm of this new movement is Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, who are the founders of their very own company, Adriano Di Marti. Within their work in the world of fashion and the textile business, they have seen the harmful effects of unfriendly fabrics such as leather, and they vowed to come up with something that could rival this popular material. In the end, they realized that cactus leaves were the perfect solution…
Cacti grow across the world, and they are extremely hard-wearing plants that require only a small amount of water to survive. While many wouldn’t consider using the prickly and pointy plant as a material, Adrián and Marte realized that if they processed these leaves and pressed them down, they would create a leather-like material. The best part? Growing more cacti for their leather would require a minimal amount of water and would produce a minimal effect on the environment.
As if that wasn’t enough to put a smile on your face, these two geniuses also found a way to dye their makeshift leather to add a little somethin’ somethin’ extra into the mix. This dye not only allows the company to create amazing products in a variety of colors, but this dye also adds even more longevity to the product.
So, not only is this new cactus leather fully plant-based – because it’s quite literally made from a plant – but it’s also organic, natural, and partially biodegradable. The best part? It won’t cost you any more than vegan leather! These guys deserve a round of applause, right?
