Having spent weeks trying to identify contestants on The Masked Singer, we’re still kind of obsessed with the show. We had so much fun watching it, and it continues to be the gift that keeps on giving.
Anyone who saw Nicola Roberts’ Instagram story at the weekend will know she wasn’t alone during the unmasking. She and several friends were watching when she was revealed as the talented voice behind Queen Bee and crowned the season’s champion. Included in the exclusive guest list were two people Girls Aloud fans will know well – Kimberley Walsh and Cheryl.
Both of Nicola’s former bandmates were over the moon when their friend won, with Walsh even tearing up. She struggled to keep her emotions in check because she was immensely proud of what Roberts had achieved. Not only had the singer won the competition, but she’d also fought insecurity and public perception of her talents in the process. She’d shown the public what she was capable of, and for the first time, people truly paid attention.
Seeing such an emotional display from Kimberley was incredibly touching, and it highlighted the genuine friendship that these three women share. They’ve been in each other’s lives for nearly 20 years now, and for most of that time, they’ve been inseparable. Their enduring friendship is a beautiful thing to see in the limelight, especially from women who are already such strong role models. Of course, the main reason it stands out is that girl group relations aren’t always so positive.
The Spice Girls, Sugababes, The Saturdays, Fifth Harmony, The Pussycat Dolls, and even Girls Aloud all suffered rumors of infighting during their heyday. Little Mix – one of the only girl groups around at the moment – has also experienced this by the bucketload, particularly in regards to Jesy and Perrie’s relationship. Regardless of whether any tension exists or not, the media seems determined to pit female singers against one another. Unfortunately, that usually results in the group splitting up or someone choosing to leave, an outcome that breaks fans’ hearts.
Obviously, the media aren’t solely to blame for every argument, but their influence is hard to deny. Thankfully, no matter what rumors have been spread about the members of Girls Aloud, Cheryl, Nicola, and Kimberley haven’t let that sway them. They’ve maintained their friendship long after the group’s split, to the point they still celebrate one another’s achievements to this day. The joy that brings us is immeasurable.
